Trace Route
| Reference: Trace Route
Before submitting about lag, please run this. Most times lag is caused by the outside path to the data center. Rarely does a data center cause lag. It is possible that the machine can cause lag if it is overloaded, but MammothGames monitors machine load through its proprietary game panel software to assure machine load does not cause lag. Using tracert (Windows XP)
- click Start
- click on Run
- type in "cmd"
- Click OK and view window.
- Inside windows, type cd C:\Windows
- You should at command prompt the path is now C:\windows
- You can now use the built in command, "tracert"
- To see a trace, type tracert
- List the domain or IP you wish to trace)
- The trace lists each link on the internet. The first column is the hop number. The next three columns show Ping times between you and that particular host. The last column shows the name of that server, or gateway, and its IP address.
- The last time is the total time ("ping") to the IP or hostname.
- If you observe lag, you are looking for the hops that cause delay (biggest time delays). These can change at times of day or days.
You have little control of these. Your ISP picks the routes taken. But it may help to know why there is lag and you might see if other locations work better.
